Alkosel - quality-control process

Lallemand Animal Nutrition tests each lot of Alkosel for total Selenium and Selenomethionine before it is shipped for use. To produce Alkosel, yeast is fed inorganic selenium throughout the growth process to produce organic, selenium-charged yeast. After completing the growing process, the yeast is washed to remove any unincorportated selenium, though the typical Se retention rate of the washed yeast is around 98 percent.

The majority of this yeast is in selenomethionine, and the remaining organic portion as selenoproteins. The yeast usually has higher than 2000ppm selenium, but the levels are regulated by adding non-Se yeast to ensure a consistent product.
